My name is Raymont Hawkins – Jones and I will be posting periodically about my families’s history and origins and the people involved with them.

My family lines are the:

Jones family from Robeson and Cumberland County, NC in the 1800s.  They were Free People of Color with Native roots and maybe connected to the Manuels, Locklear, Oxendines, Chavis and Lowery families that were other free families from that same area.

Mckay family from Bladen County – Black and mulatto slaves freed in 1865. White ancestry from Scotland (1750s)

Jones family from Northampton, NC. – African American slaves freed in 1865. They were slaves of Mathew Ransom who inherited them in 1851 when he married his wife Martha “Patty” Exum, the daughter of Joseph Exum who died in the 1840s.

Barretts family from Isle of Wight County, Virginia. – African American slaves freed in 1865.

Ricks family from Southampton County, Virginia – Black and mulatto slaves that were freed in 1782 in Southampton County, Virginia.

Artis family from Southampton County, Virginia – Mulatto slaves freed in 1712 in Norfolk County, Virginia Colony.

Broadnax family from Southampton County, Virginia – Black and mulatto slaves freed in 1865.

Johnson family from Northampton, NC. – African American slaves freed in 1865.

Brown family- Franklin, Virginia – Unknown – maybe connected to Parker family from Virginia and or Richardson family from Halifax, NC (Free people of color lines)

Williams family from Halifax County, NC – African American slaves freed in 1865.  Possible connected to the Richardson family from Halifax, NC (A Free people of color line with Native origins)

Horner family from Granville and Orange County, NC and Tennessee. Mulatto slaves freed in 1865.  White ancestry with German/English roots.

Allred family from Tennessee – White ancestry mid 1700s.  Married into the Horner family

Bledsoe, Terrell, Moore, Sexton from Granville County, NC (1800s) – White ancestry with English roots

Anderson family – Mulatto slaves freed in 1712 in Norfolk County, Virginia Colony.  Married into the White and Nansemond Native Bass Family and lived as “Indians”  in Granville County, NC in the mid 1700s.

Bass Family  (1600s) – Nansemond Native American and English origins, (Lanier and Harris – European origins)

Chavis family from Granville County, NC (mid 1700s – 1800s) – Free People of Color family with Black, White and Native Origins (Priddy/Harlow – Virginia early 1700s – White family ancestry), (Gibson/Lightfoot – White and Pamunkey Native Origins – Virginia 1600s – mid 1700s).

Richardson family from Granville County, NC (late 1700s – 1800s) – Free People of Color family with Native Origins. ( Knight/Woodson/Pride – Virginia 1700s white family ancestry)

White family from Cleveland County, NC/York County, SC – Mulatto slaves freed in 1865.

Crockett family from Cleveland County, NC/York County, SC – Mulatto slaves freed in 1865 with also Strahan (Strawn) white family ancestry with Irish origins.

Hawkins family with Georgia roots but was in Leon County, Florida in 1870. African American slaves freed in 1865.

Washington family with Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama roots that married into the Hawkins family during slavery.  African American slaves freed in 1865.

Burnett/Rouse family from Leon County, Florida – African American slaves freed in 1865 with roots from Georgia.

Moore family from Leon County, Florida – Mulatto slaves freed in 1865 with roots from North and South Carolina.

Lundy family from Lee County, GA 1870, Mitchell and Doughtery County in subsequent years. Black and mulatto slaves freed in 1865. Some family changed their last name to Jones.

Downer family from Mitchell County, GA 1870 and Doughtery County in subsequent years. African American slaves freed in 1865.

Griffin/Adams families from Putnam County, GA 1870. African American slaves freed in 1865.

Maddox/Reid families from Putnam County, GA 1870. Black and Mulatto slaves freed in 1865.  (descended and owned by Maddox/Wingate family and by Reid family).

Reid/Smith families from Putnam County, GA 1870. African American slaves freed in 1865.

Sasnett families from Putnam and Hancock County, GA 1870. Black and Mulatto slaves freed in 1865.  (owned by Sasnett family and by Harris family of Hancock County).

Callaway families from Putnam County, GA 1870. African American slaves freed in 1865.

James/Stickland families from Tatnall County, GA 1870. African American slaves freed in 1865.
